Bible Time With Kids: 8 Simple Moments That Actually Work at Home

You don’t need a theology degree. You don’t need a perfectly planned family devotional or a printed curriculum binder. What you need are the ordinary moments already happening in your home — and a little intentionality to fill them with God’s Word.

This is not the ultimate guide. It is a reference born from years of real family life — the beautiful, chaotic, imperfect, and deeply sacred work of raising children in the faith. Here are eight moments and ideas that work.

THE MOMENTS: When to Do It

1. Bedtime

Why? It is the moment when screens, distractions, and the noise of the world finally stop — just before your family rests. That moment is precious beyond measure.

One day — and it comes faster than you think — those little bundles of love and joy will go out to live amazing, blessed, and prosperous lives of their own. As a father of three, my deepest advice is this: please don’t miss a single one of those unique nights when they still live under your roof. The last thing they hear before they close their eyes matters. Make it His Word.

2. Breakfast Time

Why? Eating is a celebration. The natural flow that begins with a prayer of blessing over your food moves beautifully and naturally into Bible instruction. There are no devices, no rush (if you plan it that way), and little hearts are rested and open. Start the day with truth.

3. When Something Unexpected Happens

Life is the greatest classroom. When problems arise, when injustice stings, when negative emotions overflow — be ready to offer God’s perspective. Don’t rush past those moments. The Lord has the best answer for everything your child will ever face, and your job is to point them there before the world points them somewhere else.

4. Car Rides

The car is a surprisingly sacred space. No one can leave, everyone is captive, and conversation flows naturally. Car rides are especially good for exploring themes of prudence, self-control, forgiveness, and gratitude. They are also one of the best places to memorize Scripture together — put a verse on a sticky note on the dashboard and work on it all week.

THE PRACTICAL IDEAS: How to Do It

(Here is what took me years — and more than a few failures — to learn.)

1. Fill Yourself First

You cannot give what you do not have. Your ability to speak His Word into your children’s lives flows directly from your own life with God. This is not a guilt-trip — it is the most liberating truth in this entire list. When you stay rooted in Scripture, the right words come naturally, even in the most unexpected moments.

2. Use a Paper Bible

Put down the Bible app. Use a physical Bible — one your children can see you hold, flip through, and treasure. It eliminates distractions, models reverence, and shows your children that this Book is different from every other thing on a screen. Let them have their own copy too, even if the pages get wrinkled.

3. Keep a Special Notebook for Copywork

Have pens and a dedicated notebook for transcribing Bible verses by hand. Copywork is one of the oldest and most effective ways to hide God’s Word in a child’s heart. Writing slows the mind down, and what the hand writes, the heart remembers.

4. Use a Simple 5-Minute Rotation

This is the single most practical tool I can offer you. Rather than a long Bible lesson, rotate through short activities — especially with young children. Here is a rhythm that works:

• Start with a connecting question — “Are you feeling sad because your friend didn’t want to share her toys with you?” Meet them where they are.
• Read a Bible passage — Short is better. One story, one parable, one verse — done well is worth more than a chapter done poorly.
• Explain new words clearly — Don’t skip over unfamiliar language. Take a moment to explain shepherd, parable, covenant, grace. These words become their vocabulary for life.
• Ask discovery questions — “What would be the right thing to do?” “What do you think the Lord is telling us?” “In your own words, what is happening here?”
• Copywork (when the moment allows) — Bedtime, car rides, and breakfast aren’t always ideal, but when you’re at a table with time, write it down together.
• Pray together.
• Hug. Always. Every single time.

A note on timing: if your child is under 5, aim for rotations of about 5 minutes per activity. Over 5 years old, you can stretch to about 8 minutes. Follow your instincts — you know your child better than any guideline.

5. Keep It the Right Length

Attention spans vary by age, temperament, and the day they’ve had. A short Bible time done with presence and joy is worth ten times more than a long one where everyone is restless and you end in frustration. End while they still want more.

6. Always Close With Prayer and Blessing

Every Bible time, without exception, should end with prayer — and with you speaking a blessing over your children out loud. Let them hear you ask God to protect them, guide them, and fill them with His Spirit. Those words settle into little souls and stay there for life.

7. Draw and Paint Together

Art is one of the most natural ways children process what they learn. After reading a parable, invite them to draw what they pictured. The shepherd searching in the hills. The tiny mustard seed. The widow standing before the judge. You will be amazed at what they understood — and what they create.

8. Sing and Dance

Singing and dancing are expressions of worship and praise — and they are wonderfully, unabashedly fun. Include them. Put on a worship song, simply dance and sing together. Joy is not a distraction from teaching. Joy is the teaching.

One Last Thing

Is it going to be perfect? No. So don’t be so hard on yourself.  Is it going to be a blessing? Absolutely, yes. So praise the Lord.

The secret weapon is not a curriculum, a method, or a perfect routine. The secret weapon is consistency. Show up imperfectly, faithfully, and repeatedly — and watch what God does with that.
